No. The selected area is copied out of the original at full resolution, so the pixels are untouched. The file is smaller only because it contains fewer pixels than the whole photo did.
How do I crop a picture to a perfect square?
Choose 1:1 from the aspect ratio list before you drag. The selection box is then locked to a square whatever size you draw, which is what most profile photos need.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The image is read by your browser and drawn on a canvas on your own device. Nothing is transmitted, which is why it also works with the connection off.
What size should I crop for Instagram or YouTube?
Square 1:1 for a standard Instagram post, 9:16 for stories and reels, and 16:9 for YouTube video and thumbnails. Pick the ratio here and crop as large as the original allows.
